Rob MacIsaac
President of Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology

On February 1, 2009, Rob MacIsaac became the 7th President of Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology. Rob MacIsaac was the first Chair of Metrolinx, the transportation authority responsible for planning and governing transportation in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA). Prior to his work at Metrolinx, Rob MacIsaac served as mayor of the City of Burlington between 1997 and 2006. During this time, he became well-known for his regional approach and progressive growth management ideas for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.

Rob completed his undergraduate degree in Economics at the University of Waterloo in 1984 and received a Law degree at the University of Western Ontario in 1987. He was called to the Bar in 1989. Born in 1962, Rob is a lifetime resident of Burlington. He is married to Anne and has two children, Sarah and Catherine.

Don Drummond
Chair, Commission on the Reform of Ontario's Public Services

Don Drummond is the retired Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at TD Financial Group. He led TD Economics' work in analyzing and forecasting economic performance in Canada and abroad. For Canada, this work is conducted at the city, provincial, industrial, and national levels. He retired from TD after an illustrious financial career to his current role as Matthews Fellow and Distinguished Visiting Scholar in the School of Policy Studies at Queens University.

Prior to joining TD Bank, Drummond worked with the Department of Finance. During his 23-year career in finance, Mr. Drummond progressed in the areas of economic analysis and forecasting, fiscal policy, and tax policy moving to Assistant Deputy Minister, Fiscal Policy and Economic Analysis; Assistant Deputy Minister, Tax Policy and Legislation; and, most recently, Associate Deputy Minister. He was ultimately responsible for economic analysis, fiscal policy, tax policy, social policy and federal-provincial relations, and he coordinated the planning of the annual federal Budgets.

Born and raised in Victoria, British Columbia, Drummond graduated from the University of Victoria. He subsequently received his M.A. in Economics from Queen's University. In addition to being the Chief Economist at TD, he is the Matthews Fellow in Global Public Policy Queen's University and Chair of the Commission on the Reform of Ontario Public Services.

Drummond travels widely across Canada and abroad, speaking to TD clients and various groups about the Canadian economy and its prospects, and he is frequently quoted by the media on economic and policy issues.

Kerry Munro
Group President – Digital Delivery Network, Canada Post Corporation

Mr. Munro was appointed to this newly created role in August 2011. He assumes accountability for the creation and management of Canada Post’s digital strategy and network, which encompasses epost, eMarketing, Direct Marketing and Advertising products, all data assets and products, and partnerships in the digital space. Mr. Munro brings more than 20 years of executive management experience in technology and digital media. Most recently, he was Chief Operating Officer at Syncapse Corp., a global leader in social media management. As managing director from 2005 to 2009, he built Yahoo! Canada into the country’s largest digital media company and Yahoo’s best-performing operation worldwide.

He previously held senior roles in information technology at companies such as Bell Canada and AT&T Canada. Mr. Munro has advised Fortune 500 corporations, executives and boards on the use of digital technology. He has addressed conferences on such topics as digital marketing and consumer engagement, social media and the future of media and advertising in a digital world and was recognized as one of the top influential marketers in Canada.

Mr. Munro holds an MBA from Queen’s University and a BA in Economics from the University of Toronto.

Derek Burleton
Vice President & Deputy Chief Economist

Derek Burleton received his Bachelor of Commerce from Queen’s University and an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics.

Recently, Derek was promoted to Vice President and Deputy Chief Economist for TD Bank Group. In his current position, he heads a team that provides leading Canadian economic and financial analysis. Derek has also authored a number of reports that have generated considerable attention across the country, including: “A New Normal: Canada’s Potential Growth During Recovery and Beyond”, “The Coming Era of Fiscal Restraint” and “Charting a Course for Sustainable Health Care in Ontario”. He is frequently called upon to speak to the media on economic issues and he gives numerous presentations to various groups within and outside TD.

Jim Carroll
Trends, Creativity and Innovation Expert

Innovation, creativity, trends and change -- that's the focus of internationally recognized futurist Jim Carroll. Jim has a passion for effecting compelling change with lasting results. Tim McTiernan
President and Vice-Chancellor of UOIT

Dr. Tim McTiernan was appointed president and vice-chancellor of UOIT on July 1, 2011. Dr. McTiernan has held numerous academic and leadership roles throughout Canada in the university, college and government sectors.

Dr. McTiernan has more than 25 years of senior-level leadership and administrative experience spanning the areas of innovation; research administration and commercialization; social and economic development; and post-secondary education. Dr. McTiernan has served as assistant vice-president, Government, Institutional and Community Relations; interim vice-president, Research; assistant vice-president, Research and executive director, The Innovations Group, University of Toronto; acting deputy minister, assistant deputy minister and chief operating officer, Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation; president, Canadore College of Applied Arts and Technology in North Bay, Ontario; and deputy minister, cabinet secretary and chief negotiator for Land Claims, Self-Government and Devolution, Yukon government.

Internationally he serves on the board of Atlantic Corridor - Ireland. Nationally he is a member of the Council of Canadian Academies' Expert Panel on Science Performance and Research Funding, and the Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) Advisory Board for the National Research Council. In addition, he serves on a number of boards, including Ontario Genomics Institute and the Yves Landry Foundation. He previously served on the founding board of MaRS Innovation, MaRS, MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund Inc., the board of BioDiscovery Toronto, chaired the Committee of the Presidents of the Ontario Association of Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology (now Colleges Ontario) and was co-chair of the College-University Consortium Council. He has served as a trustee of the Ontario Innovation Trust, a member of the North Bay Economic Development Commission, a board member of Contact North - Canada's largest distance education network, a member of the secretariat to the National Task Force on Environment and Economy, a founding member both of the Dispute Resolution Board established pursuant to the Yukon First Nations Land Claims Settlement Act and of the Environmental Impact Screening Committee established pursuant to the Western Arctic (Inuvialuit) Claims Settlement Act.

Dr. McTiernan has published on innovation, conservation, sustainable development and post-secondary education policy. He is a frequent conference presenter and panellist and has lectured for University of British Columbia.

From Kilkenny, Ireland, Dr. McTiernan earned his Bachelor of Arts (Mod) in Psychology and Philosophy (1973) from Trinity College in Dublin, and his Master of Arts degree (1977) and PhD (1982) in Psychology from the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Patrick Moore
The Sensible Environmentalist

A founder of the environment movement and known as the sensible environmentalist, Dr. Patrick Moore believes that one of our most serious environmental problems can be attributed to the ineffective communication between special interest groups and the business community. A leader of the international environmental movement for more than 30 years, Dr. Moore reveals the myths and misinformation that distort current environmental debates.

Martha A. Healey
Partner,
Norton Rose Canada

Martha Healey has considerable expertise in federal and provincial regulatory matters, specifically in federally regulated matters, including competition, health, agricultural and consumer products regulation, food, drug, cosmetic and consumer product recalls, transportation, privacy, records management and access to information. Ms. Healey advises clients regularly in the food, drug (human and veterinarian), medical device, natural health product, pesticide, animal feed, communications and other commercial sectors. Her practice includes telecommunications, transportation, life sciences and competition law (including mergers, marketing practices and advertising), as well as information and e-commerce regulation and conflict of interest investigation. She is Chair of the administrative law and judicial review team.

Ms. Healey liaises regularly with federal regulatory officials. She advises clients on preparing and implementing corporate competition and privacy law compliance audits and plans, industry certification programs and advertising and marketing programs, as well as on access to information litigation, third-party responses to access requests and numerous other issues. She also provides competition and privacy law advice to existing Canadian businesses and new business entrants into Canada.

Ms. Healey has appeared before the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Appeal. She has also appeared before and participated in proceedings before federal and provincial tribunals and regulatory authorities and a federal commission of inquiry.

David D. Hay
Managing Director and Vice Chairman
CIBC World Markets

Mr. Hay joined CIBC in 2010 as Managing Director and Vice Chairman of CIBC World Markets Inc. In his role, Mr. Hay focuses on senior relationships for CIBC with particular attention to power and utility clients.

Mr. Hay was the CEO of New Brunswick Power Corporation for six years ending January 2010. Mr. Hay and his team, using various private sector management techniques executed a turnaround of the corporation. He was appointed by a conservative government and renewed by a subsequent liberal government. Focus was on operations, HR and financial performance. A ten percent reduction in headcount, introduction of Balanced Scorecard methodology and other techniques turned four years of losses ($156 million) into five profitable years ($285 million). A failed fuel deal with Venezuela was rehabilitated through a $338 million settlement with the Chavez government. HR focus on “people at their best” resulted in a Top 100 Employer designation for the past three years and a zero lost time accident record over a 12 month period.

Prior to NB Power, Mr. Hay ran his own consulting company, Delgatie Incorporated which orchestrated the IPO financing for Star Choice Communications, and the TSX public takeover of Champion Road Machinery by Volvo. From 1984 to 1996 Mr. Hay worked for Merrill Lynch in Toronto and London England with the bulk of his career spent in European Mergers and Acquisitions ending up as Managing Director. On his return to Canada, Mr. Hay was a Senior Vice President and Director responsible for Mergers and Acquisitions.

A lawyer by training, Mr. Hay started his career as at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt in Toronto, was a Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of Ontario and taught part time at both the University of Toronto and University of New Brunswick.

Dr. Rick Miner
President Emeritus
Seneca College

Dr. Rick Miner is President of Miner and Miner Ltd., a management consulting firm that specializes in issues related to labour force demand, jobs of the future, Human Resource Management and post-secondary education. Prior to this position, he served as Seneca College’s President from August 2001 to July 2009, at which time he retired and was appointed at Seneca’s President Emeritus.

Prior to joining Seneca, he was Vice-President, University of New Brunswick for seven years. Before his term at UNB, he was at Saint Mary’s University in Nova Scotia where he served as Director of the Canada/China Language and Cultural Program from 1989 to 1993, Dean of Commerce from 1982 to 1987, and MBA Director from 1978 to 1981. Dr. Miner has also held faculty positions with the University of New Brunswick, the University of Toronto and Saint Mary’s University.

Dr. Miner holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from Gettysburg College, a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Utah and a Doctorate in Management from the University of Minnesota.

He has written books and papers on the subjects of management, organizational behavior and labour force projections, and has spoken extensively in Canada and abroad on these and related topics.

Amongst the awards he has received are the Ontario Minister of Training Colleges and Universities Life Time Achievement award for 2010, the President’s Award, Saint John Board of Trade, a CIDA Professional Award, MBA Professor of the Year (Saint Mary’s University) and various community and student recognitions.

Dr. Miner is Past Chair of the Committee of Presidents of Ontario Colleges. He has served on the boards of the Millennium Scholarship Foundation, the Ontario Innovation Trust, the Saint John Airport Authority, the University of New Brunswick, Seneca College, Polytechnics Canada, the Toronto Regional Research Alliance, The Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance, RC-2020 (an association of large urban colleges, where he has been appointed as an emeritus member) and Seneca Corporation. He is currently on the Board of the CAAT Pension Plan as well as a member of the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. He was actively involved with the Toronto Financial Services Alliance and the Transportation Advisory Committee of Metrolinx (formerly the Greater Toronto Transit Authority).

Dr. Miner works closely with various government departments on issues that impact on immigration, the skills shortage, innovation and commercialization.

In 2007, New Brunswick Premier Shawn Graham appointed Dr. Miner as commissioner of the province’s Commission on Post-Secondary Education. The Commission reviewed the entirety of the province’s post-secondary system, including public and private universities and colleges. The report (Advantage New Brunswick) was delivered to the Premier in September 2007, and the government acted on its recommendations in 2008. In July 2008, Dr. Miner was appointed by Federal and Provincial Labour Ministers to serve on a five person panel to recommend improvements to Canada’s Labour Market Information System. The panel report was completed in June 2009.

David McFadden

Dr. Bryne Purchase
Executive Director
Queens Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy

Bryne Purchase began his career in public policy in 1975 with the Ontario Ministry of Treasury and Economics, advancing to Assistant Deputy Minister and Chief Economist in the Office of Economic Policy (1984-88). During that time he also served in New York as Senior Counselor, Economic Affairs.

From 1988 to 1998, Dr Purchase was a principal in Strategico, a corporate strategy and public policy consulting company and later served at the C.D. Howe Institute, the Economic Council of Canada and as a Senior Fellow in the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University.

Dr. Purchase returned to the Ontario government in 1998, accepting the concurrent positions of Deputy Minister of Finance, Deputy Minister of Revenue and Deputy Minister of Economics, and served in these capacities until August 2000 when he assumed the position of Deputy Minister, Ministry of Energy, Science and Technology. He retired in May, 2004. He is a former director of the Ontario Innovation Trust, SuperBuild Corporation, OPG Ventures Corporation and Chair of the Board of the Ontario Financing Authority and the Ontario Electric Financial Corporation.

A PhD graduate in Economics from the University of Toronto, Dr. Purchase is the author of a number of publications relating to governance, economics and competitiveness. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at the School of Policy Studies, Queen’s University and founding Executive Director of the Queen’s institute for Energy and Environmental Policy.
